About The Poem of the Man-God

Understanding the Work and its Author

Maria Valtorta (1897-1961)

Maria Valtorta was born in Caserta, Italy, on March 14, 1897. A deeply spiritual person from her youth, she joined the Third Order of the Servites of Mary and dedicated her life to serving God. In 1920, while walking on a Milan street, she was struck in the back with an iron bar by a young delinquent. This injury, combined with other health issues, eventually left her bedridden from April 1, 1934, until her death on October 12, 1961.

During her bedridden years, particularly from 1943 to 1947, Valtorta wrote almost 15,000 handwritten pages of what she described as heavenly dictations and visions of Jesus's life. These writings would later become "The Poem of the Man-God" (also known as "The Gospel as Revealed to Me" in more recent editions).
