The Poem of the Man-God by Maria Valtorta is a multi-volume work, originally published in Italian in 1956, that offers a detailed narrative of the life of Jesus Christ, based on over 15,000 handwritten pages of visions and dictations Valtorta claimed to have received from Jesus and Mary between 1943 and 1947. Spanning approximately 4,000 pages across five volumes, the book covers the birth and hidden life of Mary and Jesus, His public ministry, Passion, death, Resurrection, and the Assumption of Mary, with vivid descriptions and dialogues not found in the Gospels. Valtorta, a bedridden Italian mystic, presented herself as a "secretary" recording divine revelations.
Maria Valtorta (1897–1961) was an Italian Catholic mystic and writer best known for her monumental work, The Poem of the Man-God, a detailed narrative of Jesus Christ's life based on visions and dictations she claimed to receive from Jesus and Mary. Born in Caserta, Italy, Valtorta joined the Third Order of the Servites of Mary and lived a life marked by chronic illness, becoming bedridden by 1934 after a spinal injury. From 1943 to 1947, she recorded over 15,000 handwritten pages of mystical experiences, which were later published as The Poem of the Man-God, sparking both devotion and controversy due to its vivid details and theological issues.
Mother Teresa, canonized as Saint Teresa of Calcutta, is known to have had access to and read The Poem of the Man-God by Maria Valtorta. According to Leo Maasburg, an Austrian priest and Mother Teresa's confessor, she frequently carried a copy of one of the volumes of The Poem of the Man-God with her and recommended the work to him. This indicates that she not only had access to the five-volume set but also valued it enough to carry and endorse it.
